Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM), as a major branch of the wider Chinese Medicine framework has implications for unlocking health and vitality and aiding in the management of the symptoms of many illnesses.
As with all branches of Chinese Medicine, CHM approaches wellness holistically, with poly-pharmic (multi-herb), individualised formulas derived from a pharmacopeia spanning 8,000 medicinal substances.
This individual approach aims to address not just symptoms, but the entire being. Chinese Herbal Medicine theory offers a unique perspective on healing and well-being based on the Chinese Medicine principles of Yin, Yang, Qi, Blood, Body Fluid transformation and transportation and exogenous and endogenous pathogenic factors.
The journey with Chinese Herbal Medicine begins with an explorative conversation – a sharing of one’s medical history, diet, lifestyle, environment and emotions – painting a detailed picture of the individual’s current state of health. Diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue examination are used as windows into the body’s complex internal landscape.
When a diagnosis is reached, the treatment plan can be developed in conjunction with the patient’s goals, and the appropriate blend of herbs* given to restore balance and promote long-term well-being. This plan may also be complemented by other treatments (Acupuncture/Moxibustion, Cupping etc.) or lifestyle, diet and exercise modifications, in keeping with the holistic approach of Chinese medicine.
*Dr. Ivan Folghera BHSc. (Acupuncture) can diagnose, prescribe and supply patented (pre-made) Chinese Herbal Medicine formulas in conjunction with Acupuncture treatments when they are indicated. It is expected that the relevant studies will be completed to allow him to prescribe and dispense raw herbal formulas in the coming years.
