The Fire phase is the last of the Five Elements in this series, and I’m so happy to be able to share one of my favourite phases with you.

The Fire phase rules the Heart and Small Intestine, opens into the Tongue, governs the Blood vessels, relates to the emotion of Joy and has some interesting psychological correspondences.

The Fire phase allows for discrimination and discernment – this is filtering not only internally but externally what is right and what is not.

This is of course, nothing to do with morality, but rather separating our physiological response to thoughts, feelings and events from what we perceive to be reality.

It’s the reward and warning system of our body, feeling good in response to something that’s right for us, and feeling unsure or negative about something which isn’t.

When the Fire phase is healthy, proper discernment and discrimination occurs with little effort, and we can trust our reward and warning system and move through with confidence.

If impaired, there is often confusion about how to proceed, or recklessness in our course of action, with the Heart trying to find joy ‘in all the wrong places’ so to speak.

Signs that your Fire phase is out of balance include being unable to feel – or hold onto the feeling of – joy, heart palpitations and arrythmias, slurred speech, ulcers on the tongue, burning sensation with urination with ash coloured complexion and glazing of the eyes, mania (excessive joy), laughing often and at inappropriate times and being unable to set or stick to healthy personal boundaries.
