In the theory of Wu Xing, Water generates wood and controls Fire.
The Fire – Water relationship is a special axis of cooling and heating involving the Kidneys and Heart. The Heart – which houses the Spirit or Shen – warms the Kidneys and the Kidneys – which house the Essence or Jing – cool the heart.
Balance in this relationship is essential for the primal instincts of the Water element which support our role in survivial, conception and reproduction and connection to our world and each other, many of which involve a certain amount of fear (including healthy fear) from overcoming and preventing the Joy that lives in our Heart from being experienced.
Disharmony in the Water element can lead to a disruption of this careful balance and phobias can develop, deep depression (as distinct from the grief and sadness associated with the Metal element), disruption in breathing such as asthma, significant digestive disorders, serious disorders of cold and heat in the body, systemic phlegm formation, reproductive disorders including diminished libido, back spine and brain problems, severe exhaustion and burn-out, panic syndromes, congestive heart failure and arrythmias, lower body edema and swelling.
