Figs! In season and delicious, what is Chinese Medicine’s take on this wonderful fruit?!
According to the five flavours of Chinese Medicine, Figs are sweet, neutral in temperature and enter the Lung, Stomach and Large Intestine Channel.
On account of the Lung and Large Intestine benefits, the fig is a fantastic Autumn snack, and can assist with the changes in the body that often result in dryness, such as dry skin and nasal passages.
Being neutral means figs are perfect for anyone, irrespective of thermal classification (as this can relate to pathology if someone is too hot or cold according to Chinese Medicine) and the Sweet flavour nourishes the energy of the body.
Be careful eating too many figs however if you are diabetic or have Phlegm-Fire Congestion (this is a Chinese Medicine Diagnosis which may correspond to a number of conditions, symptoms include nausea, yellow-green nasal expectoration, burning on evacuation of faeces or a feeling of being incompletely evacuated, urinary burning and recurrent bladder infections, poor appetite and desire to vomit)..
Otherwise, enjoy this wonderful fruit at room temperature, dried or cooked into a preserve while they’re fresh and abundant!
