Zǐ sū yè is a fragrant, purplish leaf which is very delicate when dried.

It’s use is for exterior cold conditions where there is simultaneous chills and fever with a greater propensity for feeling cold, no sweating, muscle aches and pains in the upper back and head with or without nasal symptoms.

Used in this manner, this herb dispels cold and promotes sweating – if there is already sweating this herb should not be used.

The aromatic nature of this herb promotes the movement of Qi in the Spleen and Stomach and checks vomiting and nausea due to cold in the Stomach/Spleen or morning sickness due to restless fetus syndrome (cold related).

Seafood poisoning is often due to severe cold and therefore this can be used in conjunction with fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) to rectify this, or cooked in with seafood and other dishes to detoxify them.

Due to its acrid, uprising and warming nature, it is also useful eaten fresh in Spring to move stagnant Qi.

When prepared fresh it is known as Shiso, which is also the Japanese name for the plant!

This herb corresponds to Metal and Earth and is absolutely stunning to look at, touch and smell! I use this herb fresh as a substitute for Basil just before Autumn to prepare and open the Lungs for the season to come! 🍁
