The Large Intestine organ is the Fu organ pair to the Lung Zang where Zang are Yin and Fu are Yang.
As a Fu organ, the Large intestine constantly fills and empties, in this case with the turbid products of digestion.
The functions of the Large Intestine is to finish separating the turbid and the clear started by the Small Intestine and ‘let go’ quite literally of the turbid.
The Large Intestine corresponds to Metal, and is injured by dryness. Dysfunction of the Large Intestine always results in constipation, whether through failure of the Lung Qi to descend, inability of the Large Intestine itself to let go or by heat transmitted from the Stomach.
The Stomach and Large Intestine also share a relationship, as both are named Yangming or Yang Brightness in Six Stage differentiation of Cold Damage.
When cold enters the body, it goes through six stages of depth, each one having its own distinct syndrome. If the cold reaches the third stage, Yangming, there is a big fever, big sweat, big pulse, big thirst and constipation.
The treatment for this, other than acupuncture on the Large Intestine and Stomach Channel to clear heat and expel the fire from the bowels is Bai Hu Tang, or White Tiger Decoction containing Shi Gao (Gypsum fibrosum), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena asphodeloides), Jing Mi (Semen Oryzae) and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) taken orally.
Diarrhea is never a symptom of Large Intestine disease in Chinese Medicine, this would always be considered a Stomach or Spleen issue (including in the case of Ulcerative Colitis, despite this being located in the large intestine organ) as Chinese Medicine considers organ systems differently to western medicine!
