Treatment of Cough and Cold with Chinese Medicine

Shang Han (Cold Damage) is a description of external cold entering the body.

The method of releasing cold at the first stages is to open the pores and allow sweating.

When sweating is already occurring, Shang Han is described as empty, with full syndrome classified by absence of sweating.

Too much sweat and the fluids of the body will be damaged, so the combination of Gui Zhi and Bai Shao checks this balance, nourishes and protects fluids whilst allowing sufficient sweating to remove the external cold.

In this case, Phlegm was also present in the Lung, so additional medicinals were added to resolve, expectorate and drain the phlegm.

Gui Zhi Tang contains Sheng Jiang and Da Zao to protect the Stomach from the strong nature of the other herbs used, and Fu Ling was added to further protect digestion and allow the Phlegm to be drained via urination.

Sang Ye was added to moderate the warm nature of this formula particularly given the hot climate at the moment.

After three doses, and two sleeps where sweating occurred, the syndrome is 90% better, the phlegm is dislodging when coughing, the amount of coughing is around ¼ what it was, fatigue is absent and appetite has returned.
