Five Taxations – Excessive Lying Down

The Five Taxations are concepts described in the Huang De Nei Jing Su Wen (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine) which is considered to be the oldest Chinese Medicine Text authored between 2,300 and 4,600 years ago.

The taxation we are going to explore today is excessive lying which injures the Qi and – you guessed it – the Lung.

At this vital time of year (Autumn), we want to do everything we can to support our Lung organ and lying down – including sleeping – does not give the Lung the opportunity to be taking in the breath and hence new Qi.

Particularly as we may be feeling more tired than usual at this time of year, it is important to make time to perform breathing exercises or engage in conscious breath exercise such as Qi Gong or Tai Chi.

This ensures a constantly renewed Qi being brought in through the Lungs and helps to open them up to the world, rather than when we lie down and there is additional pressure on our Lungs, preventing them from opening and filling completely.

Relaxing is fine and Autumn is certainly a time to slow down from the hurriedness of Summer but balancing this with keeping the Lungs open is very important to keep from falling into the Winter blues!

Of course, if you are feeling as though you cannot take or expel breath easily or without pain, feel short of breath or are coughing from Autumn dryness or other respiratory concerns, make a time to come and see me to help address this so you can get back to feeling re-energised and breathing fully without obstruction!
