The Five Taxations – Excessive Standing
The Five Taxations are concepts described in the Huang De Nei Jing Su Wen (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine) which is considered to be the oldest Chinese Medicine Text authored between 2,300 and 4,600 years ago.
The second taxation we are going to explore is excessive standing which injures the bones and by extension, the Kidneys (particularly pertinent in the winter, as both pertain to Water.
Standing on our feet requires a great deal from our foundation energy, as we are literally using that foundation to support our body when upright, as well as needing that energy to protect us from the Cold evils.
It is important to balance rest and gentle movement with any requirement to be standing (standing still) during the winter months, so that our Kidneys have enough energy to not only protect us from the cold, but recuperate for the expansive, upward rising energy of Spring.
Sitting while eating is particularly important at this time – standing when eating may seem convenient and productive but during the winter it results in less nourishment for the body, and for the Kidneys – the batteries of our bodies!
You may of course have employment or other obligations where this is unavoidable, and if so, Acupuncture may be able to give your Kidneys a boost this winter, to prepare you for the year ahead!
